Activision logoWe reported a while back how Sony had planned on releasing less new titles for PS3 and now we may know one reason why. Friday, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick released a report stating that it may stop making games for the Playstation 3 in the US. It seems that high cost of development and poor sales are the reason. He claimed that the price of the PS3 was too high at $399.99, compared to the better sales records for the less expensive Wii and Xbox.

Arkham Asylum

God dammit, Warner Brothers, how the hell am I supposed to come into this convention without any bias when you set up a demo center like this?

They brought in their own little slice of Arkham Asylum to display the latest Batman game to attendees of E3 ‘09, and while it took for-f*cking-ever to get a turn to play it on the 360, it was well worth the wait.

Hit the jump for our impressions of Batman: Arkham Asylum.

was a complete overload of news, games and people. But even in the mists of information overload, there were those group of selected games that stood out and kept everyone talking. Regardless if it was a trailer, teaser or an actually playable demo on the show floor, here are some of the game that were so good—they made you want to smack your mother.

E3 09: EA Booth Tour

Every convention has a booth that becomes the “hangout” or the “meet-up” booth for friends and crowds to gather after walking the show floor. At , the EA booth was certainly that spot. Located at the entrance of the South Hall with a stage ample enough to have three dance crews have dance offs, this booth became the ideal location. Not only did the girls working out with EA’s Active attract the crowds, but also great presentations like Real Time Worlds’ APB which had everyone sitting in awe. When you didn’t find me conversing with the many people I met up there, I was playing or watching others play games. Madden 10, Harry Potter, Dead Space Extraction, EA Active, Need for Speed Shift, G.I. Joe, Tiger Woods 10, Brutal Legends and NHL 10 are just some of the games that could be found at the show floor.

Kids PlayingA recent study by Pew finds that 97% of American teens of the age 12 to 17 play computer, portable, console or online video games. When asked, half of them claimed they played yesterday and the ones who admitted to daily playing say they did so for at least an hour. Here are some of the other statistics:

  • 86% of teens play on a console like the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii.
  • 73% play games on a desktop or a laptop computer.
  • 60% use a portable gaming device like a Sony PlayStation Portable, a Nintendo DS, or a Game Boy.
  • 48% use a cell phone or handheld organizer to play games.
  • 80% of teens play five or more different game genres, and 40% play eight or more types.
  • Girls play an average of 6 different game genres; boys average 8 different types.

We expect that if Pew queried adults, they would find at least the same statistics, or more for those who play MMORPGs like WOW. As for the good news, another study last September found that, for the most part, teens playing games resulted in positive social action.

PS2Just when you were thinking of retiring your PlayStation 2 in favor of a PS3, Sony announced at the E3 that they will be releasing 100 new titles this year. CEO Jack Tretton claims, “We’re committed to the PS2 for as long as users see value in it.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the 9 year-old console itself is only $99.00 and now perhaps others will opt for the cheaper game system. Tretton also said that there will be 35 exclusive games for the PS3 in 2009.

DiRT 2 e3 2009 impressions

As a big fan of DiRT and having put in many hours into the game, I was extremely excited to get my hands on the demo at the Microsoft booth at this years .  DiRT 2 looks and feels like DiRT, but with a kick. Powered by the third generation of the EGO Engine’s racing game technology, DiRT 2 offers tuned-up car-handling and new damage engine effects.

It’s all about details and that’s what makes the difference. Depending on your car, tuning or even what type of road you are on, every vehicle will feel different. Find a car you love?  You are able to use your favorite vehicle and tune it with add-ons. With seven vehicle classes and a large collection of officially licensed rally cars and off-roads vehicles, I doubt you will have any problem in finding the best vehicle.
